I chose the ASUS UL30Vt, after reading some reviews on Amazon and other websites. I had high expectations and have so far been achieved. My primary use is for private and business consultancy, which consists mainly of email / calendar functions, Internet and Word / Excel / Powerpoint (up to 30MB files, but usually smaller). I travel often and I wanted a small laptop, given the narrowing of the space on planes actually use a laptop if you will be first class, but have enough memory and performanceserve as my sole computer. I have just returned from a business trip two days, yesterday, where I have my power cord. I exhausted the batteries on the return flight, but about 7-8 hours and another 3-4 during rest before this happened. The touchpad takes a few hours, become familiar with different shots, but it's really nice when you do. Sometimes the lines are not exactly seem to be doing what I want, but mild and rare. Only other problem is that Iobserved on two occasions to flash sites start was almost like charging. There seems to be if not shut down the laptop for a couple of days, but not sure. My only concern was that buying there is no optical drive. I always had one, although I used it about once a year, maybe. I have not lost and it really helps to turn it on.

Overall, I an ideal notebook for the size and functionality.

Nice laptop!
What can I say. It's a fast light computer. It only runs for 12 hours with the screen turned down to minimum brightness, the over-clocking off, and the internet off, but on full power it still gets a lot of hours. I haven't run any speed-test programs but it runs any games I've put on it, like Counter Strike Source and Alien Swarm. 5 Stars Baby.

Complete light weight
Have it for 2 weeks now. Its a perfect laptop for those who want to keep your work/personal files handy and not have to worry about battery life or powercords.

Keyboard is good and sturdy; Touchpad is different, but you get used to it quickly; The touchpad buttons arent very good; Since its almost useless nowadays, the lack of optical drive is just less weight to carry around; Its very thin and VERY light; Screen is really good; It looks really good, and only near the screen does it look kind of flimsy;
Battery life is amazing, i've even taken it to work and forgot to connect the power cord;

If you need to do heavy work you really need to plug it on the power cord.

Great little laptop
This little laptop does exactly as advertised. The performance is fantastic and the battery life is very good. Video is sharp and clear. The 500GB hard drive is large and fast for it's size. Bluetooth is a plus and works great. Boot-up time is very fast and in turbo mode most all software runs smoothly and fast. The touch pad takes a little getting used to, but after a few minutes use, you will not want to use anything else.

The only thing I wish it had was a backlit keyboard. Other than that, near perfect for a small, ultra-portable laptop and a great value. I am very happy with this product and have recommended it to friends and family.

I just returned from a two-day business trip yesterday in which I didn't take my power cord. I did run out of battery on the flight back, but got about 7-8 hours of work time and another 3-4 on hibernate mode before that happened. The touch pad takes a couple hours to get the feel of the different strokes, but it really neat once you do get it. Sometimes the strokes don't seem to do exactly what I want, but minor and infrequent. Only other issue is that I've noticed on two occassions that web pages start to flash almost like it was reloading. It seems to be when I have not shut down the laptop for a few days, but not quite certain. My only concern when purchasing was that there is no optical drive. I've always had one even though I used it about once a year, maybe. I've not missed it yet and it really helps keep it light.

Overall, I great laptop for the size and functionality.

The battery is not 12 hours. I have placed the power setting to the most conservative and get about 7.5 or so hours. Other than that it is a good unit.

There have been renovated recently purchased laptop with Win 7 Home Premium. We wanted to take a computer on a trip to Washington DC and were originally looking netbook. If a small is the top reason for buying a laptop, jump on netbook. By the time you add more RAM, the same as what comes standard with this device, an external optical disc in order to install third party software and a full version of Windows 7 instead of the version "light almost all netbooksCome on, there are at least enough to pay for your "cheap netbook like this unit.

Battery life is excellent. It is the fastest thing in the world? No, but we expect to know both, but is slow. The price is perfect for performance. It 's just do what we want to put them into practice without feeling too lazy.

In what seems the norm with all Windows computers, the Asus is loaded with tons of useless software. In addition to the wealth of software to get rid of junkmuch of a hard drive 320 GB was consumed by a backup system software on a hidden partition. Hardly necessary, since the computer came with recovery discs. I knew I would never matters, even if only to say that there would again remove all hard drive I wanted, and has no way to do is destroy every bit of data that are currently on the disk. What if important data before a system that no longer have to start saving?

Very seriously, I findhard to believe that consumers have no complaint against PC makers will not be filed a true copy of Windows that you paid on a hard drive. At least Asus provides recovery from hard drives with this device. Some manufacturers use a single copy of the system software on the hard disk. And how is that a fuse or even useful? A copy of the hard disk, similar to a retail sale, allows the drive as you can back up important data first before restoring repair or reconstruct the otherHard disk.

What I did was the final release of Windows 7 Home Premium I bought my Mac Pro and install the laptop hard drive wiped with Completely it in a division C and D drive. After installation of Win 7 from the retail disc (not entirely legal, since the laptop came with the same version of Win 7 and must build their own product key), I then the driver disk that came with your computer portable to bring the hardware up and running as it should. end result was a laptop,Boots and works faster and better than I could with the factory configuration. I then use Norton Ghost to create full backups of the hard disk at regular intervals on the D drive partition. These backup files are then copied onto an external hard drive. Easiest way to do this, start a laptop repair its last saved state in case of a virus or something from the beginning.

Asus Laptop Computer
This is a very nice computer - especially for the cost. It is very fast and dependable. The screen quality is amazing. I use this product mainly for word processing and educational purposes. I have been very pleased with this purchase. There is one thing that I have found (and I read this in several reviews before purchasing) and that is there is a problem with fingerprints on the pad. However, the pros for this laptop far outweigh the smudges I wipe off after using.

Great laptop for those looking for excellent value.
We recently purchased this reconditioned laptop with Win 7 Home Premium. We wanted to take a computer with us for a trip to Washington D.C. and were originally looking at netbooks. Unless a small size is your top reason for purchasing a laptop, skip the netbooks. By the time you add on the extra RAM to equal what this unit comes with by default, an external optical drive so you can install third party software, and a full version of Windows 7 instead of the "light" version almost all netbooks come with, you're paying at least as much for your "cheap" netbook as this unit.

Battery life is excellent. Is it the fastest thing in the world? No, but we expected that. Neither though is it slow. The price perfectly fits the performance. It will easily do what we intend to use it for without feeling sluggish.

In what seems to be the norm with all Windows computers, the Asus comes loaded with tons of worthless software. Besides the plethora of junk software to get rid of, a large portion of a 320 GB drive was being consumed by a backup of the system software on a hidden partition. Hardly necessary since the computer came with restore disks. I knew I would never use those things though since that would just put everything back on the hard drive I wanted to remove, and has no option to do anything but destroy every bit of data currently on the drive. What if you need to save important data first from a system that won't boot?

Quite seriously, I find it hard to believe consumers haven't filed a lawsuit against PC manufacturers who don't give you a real copy of Windows, which you paid for, on a disk. At least Asus does give you restore disks with this unit. Some manufactures only put a copy of the system software on the hard drive. And just how is that a backup, or even useful? A real disk, similar to a retail copy, would allow you to repair the drive so you could backup important data first before doing a restore or other rebuild of the hard drive.

What I did was take the retail copy of Win 7 Home Premium I bought to install on my Mac Pro and wiped the laptop drive with it completely, repartitioning it into a C and D drive. After installing Win 7 from the retail disk (still completely legal since the laptop came with the same version of Win 7 and has its own product key to activate it), I then used the driver disk that came with the laptop to get the hardware working the way it should. End result was a laptop that boots and works much faster and better than it did with the factory setup. I then use Norton Ghost to make complete backups of the drive on a regular basis to the D drive partition. Those backup files then get copied to an external hard drive. Way easier to do a restore of the laptop to its last backed up state in case of a virus or something than starting over from scratch.

I've own couple of other laptops and this one seems to work very well. After being a developer for years, you can see how a machine works after running programs on it. This machines performs very well and I'd definitely recommend it.

ASUS - A SUESS? SURE!!
THIS LAPTOP IS GIANT. ITS REALLY BIG AND REALLY CRAZY!! ITS PRETTY MUCH THE OPPOSITE OF A NETBOOK I WOULD SAY. I LIKE IT BECAUSE IT HAS A FULL SIZE NUMERICAL KEYBOARD THAT I NEVER USE, BUT I REALLY LIKE TO LOOK AT IT AND KNOW I HAVE THAT CAPABILITY IF I WANT. I DO HAVE TO COMPLAIN THOUGH, AFTER ABOUT A WEEK OF HAVING THIS I GOT A VIRUS FROM DOWNLOADING A PROGRAM TO MAKE ME INTO AN AVATAR CHARACTER. NOT SURE IF ITS ASUS'S FAULT BUT THEIR COLORS SEEM LIKE NA'VI SO I BET IT PROBABLY IS!!

JUST A WARNING !

Satisfied
To be honest, I know very little about computers. This brand was recommended by some of my "computer geek" friends. So far I have been satisfied with this laptop and would recommended it to others. This is only the second computer that I have ever owned and is the first lap top computer that I have ever owned or used.

The key board does have a little flex in it, but it is nothing that has bothered me or effected the performance.

The battery life is not quite 12 hours. It might reach its full potential if I where to set all the settings to the proper setting for max battery life. I generally use it for checking email and word documents. With the settings that I have it at, I can get about 6-7 hours before needing to plug in. It has been used more less as a desk top computer. I have not used it outside of my house yet.

The over all appearance is sleek and slender. I like the look of this computer, but I also love the color black. (Very clean and professional looking in my opinion.) The down side is that it does collect and hold lots of finger prints, both on the outer shell and the inner face around the keyboard.

The touch pad mouse is nice and user friendly for the most part. If or when your fingers get sweaty you will have difficulties using the touch pad. It can be a little sensitive at times, especially when clicking. I have found it best to start a command off of the pad and then slide my finger onto the pad. This helps prevent unwanted commands. This was only an issue for a couple of days since I have been using a mouse for almost all navigation since.

It is a little bigger than I would have liked it to be, but that is my fault. I wanted the number pad on the right side of the key board. I would have probably been better of with the UL30 or UL80 for this reason. I am going to use this laptop for as a stationary business computer and look into an Asus net-book for on the road applications.

Once again, this review is coming from some one that knows very little about computers. Take my comments for what they are worth. I would recommend this product or brand to anyone. I have been very happy with it thus far.

I recently purchased this computer (~ 2 months, still) in my old HP to work. They are practically a research project in this purchase a computer with the following features:
– Lightweight
– Long battery life
– Small Profile
– The full version of Windows
– Wireless-N
– Keyboard not narrow
– Affordable

I must say that this computer fits the bill pretty well. Currently a student and was lookingComputer, I could easily take with me all day and not get stuck by the massive size, I would not try to be and to find a charger every few hours. Wear this computer is not a problem, it is very simple and almost forget it's there. The battery life is almost all day, and if he does because their heavy use when running video or something. After about two months, I have compiled a list of pros and cons as I see it in normal.

PRO:
– Keyboard is a dream for typing Casual
– Watch and feels very stable
– The screen is large and the light is perfect
– Extra features on the touchpad are very practical
– Storage online backup is a relief, especially for those who have had accidents in the past.
– Loads very quickly
– HDMI port

CONS:
– Fingerprints really stick even after cleaning with cleaning electronicBlocks
– Reasonable amount of bloatware pre-installed by ASUS
– Face for the function of the log is not very good, see below
– Web-Cam is very low power consumption, probably caused problems with face recognition
– Not recommended for any serious use, ergonomic disaster because when the working conditions within hours

So all in all, this is ideal for controlling a computer e-mail, Office applications use the light, and have to navigate the Internet. I would seriouslyrecommend for this purpose because it is very pleasant to use. I have an external monitor and keyboard for heavy use when I'm away from my desktop, but that is purchased, because I'll be working for 5 + hours on this machine. The HDMI port is for this wonderful.

Great computer for light use
I recently purchased this computer (~ 2 months ago) after my old hp stopped working. I did quite a bit a research into this purchase for a computer with the following features:
- Lightweight
- Long battery life
- Small profile
- Full version of windows
- wireless N
- non cramped keyboard
- reasonably priced

I must say that this computer fit the bill quite well. I am currently a college student and was looking for a computer that I could easily carry with me all day and not be bogged by the massive size, I also did not want to try and find a charger every couple hours. Carrying this computer is not a problem, it is very light weight and you almost forget it is there. The battery almost always lasts the entire day, and when it doesn't its really because of heavy use while running video or something. After about two months I have compiled a list of pros and cons as I see it with normal use.

PROS:
- Keyboard is a dream for casual typing
- Looks great and feels very sturdy
- Screen is wonderful and brightness is perfect
- Extra function on the touchpad are very handy
- Online backup storage is a relief, especially for those who have had crashes in the past.
- Charges very quickly
- HDMI port

CONS:
- Fingerprints really stick, even after wiping with electronic cleaning pads
- Decent amount of bloatware from ASUS preinstalled
- Facial recognition for log in does not work very well, see below
- Web-cam is very low power, probably causing problems with face recognition
- Not recommend for any type of serious use, because ergonomic disaster if working over a couple hours

So All in all this is a great computer to have for checking mail, light office application use, and internet browsing. I would seriously recommend it for those purposes, as it is very enjoyable to use. I have purchased a monitor and external keyboard for heavy use when I am away from my desktop, but that is because I will be working for 5+ hours on this machine. The HDMI port is wonderful for this.

Excellent linux ulta-portable
I purchased this system as a more portable counterpart to the larger desktop replacement laptop I use for consulting work. I was planning on reloading it with Linux (Ubuntu 10.04) when I bought it. I also purchased an Intel X25-V SSD replacement hard drive at the same time. While I have no idea what the Windows 7 performance is (never even booted the stock drive), the Linux performance on the SSD is quite impressive. After performing some of the recommended configuration changes to accommodate the SSD, my boot time is under 15 seconds (from switch-on to login). Running productivity related software (office, browser, IDEs) I have never notice any performance lag. I've started using this system to prove that processor speed is not the remedy to performance problems.

Battery life has been good in 2-3 hour chunks with WiFi going, but I haven't pushed it to 8+ hours endurance yet. This is the first laptop that I've used where I felt like I could leave the power brick behind when I leave the house.

It's still a fingerprint magnet, and it would have made my life a lot easier if they had used a Synaptics touchpad, but all an all a good solid system that does it's job at a good price. The build quality, system layout and configuration are quite good, it has everything I was looking for in an ultra-portable.

A Good Deal
Definitely a finger print magnet, but aren't they all? Probably the brushed aluminium option would fare better.

I've had this laptop for about two months and i can say it is a good bargain. Wish the 12 hour battery life quote was real, with a little tweaking of the "battery saving" option of Power4Gear hybrid, been able to squeeze out almost 8 hrs of battery life.

Virtualization, using Virtualbox, i can run 3 guests OSes (probably more) comfortably at the same time with RAM usage less than 3GB but with the processor straining itself. Probably overclocking it through the bios setup would improve things

Greatest limitation is the lack of in-built bluetooth.

did not have dvd-rom and recovery was impossible without dvd..
I only bought this item less than 2months ago and it started booting errors.. so I called the tech support and went through over an hour to restore without losing the files I saved.. but it did not work... what they suggested was, I need to buy or get extrenal dvd drive and use the recovery dvd to restore the entire hard drive...which I will need to buy.. because I don't have one nor my friends or family..

not half bad
this is a good computer for the money. it has a good keyboard, good batery life and a lot faster then a netbook. i had 3 or 4 different netbooks and was getting sick of them. the first version of the computer i had the hardrive went out on me but amazon relpaced :). i was defanatly happy about that. my only complains with computer is asus could have put a better quality harddrive like a wd or toshiba or something like that. i would say this computer is good for people that need a somewhat powerful computer and need it portable. i defanatly would not play the latest games on here but it could play some older games. overall a good computer.

malfunction of touchpad
Touchpad is erratic. Toshiba can't fix it or refund the money. Do not purchase this product.

Keyboard
The letters on the keyboard on this laptop are VERY light in color, so if you try to use it in a low light enviroment it is imposible to see what you are typing. Make sure to get the lighted keyboard option. Other than that we are happy with it.

Malfunction of cursor
I purchased this computer last November, and had problem with cursor.
The cursor was moving around randomly everywhere inside of screen, so when you type, all of sudden it was typing somewhere else. I returned it and Amazon sent me another Toshiba, which was doing the exact same thing. I called Toshiba tech support many times, who had no idea what to do except to send it for repair or reload all window programs from the scratch. I returned the second one and bought Sony which is working fine.

Buyer beware
Received this laptop yesterday, shipping it back today for a refund. Why? The keyboard. The next few models higher in price of Toshiba's have backlit keyboards, like the Macs. This one does not have that feature. But - the keyboard is "backlit ready", which means the letters on the keys are semi-translucent, but there's no illumination underneath to make them stand out. So in low light conditions one can barely make out letters/numbers and function keys. Ridiculous.

Also, in the process of checking the system out, a restart yielded Windows 7 needing to "rebuild itself". I didn't install any software or add hardware to prompt this. Maybe an anomaly, don't know. Could be it's just me, but Windows 7 seems to be 2x too cute. It's constantly getting in the way of me just trying to get something done. Lots of glitz, but underneath, it's trying real hard to be 'Mac-like' but failing miserably. Will seriously look at Macs for my laptop choice next purchase.

Well, to me that I do it before the delivery date, second, and frankly it is good business, good price good Window7 for which I lived for the first time window, struck seven, and I can say that c ' is a good improvement since the old windows, easy to use and to restore in case something goes wrong. In addition to the benefits you get from Windows, this Toshiba has all the fast and the interface that you need basically!

Well informed about the battery I noticed that it may have the last3 hours (during the release of some PHP scripts, etc.)

If you are planning to install another operating system on it ieLinux have some difficulties.

this has so far been a great computer ,easy to use and lots of new features windows 7 is great!

Well, I was impressed by the fact that I got it before the delivery date, second and honestly it is a good deal, good price good window7, for the first time I have experienced window 7, and I can say that there is a good improvement since the old windows, easy to use and to restore in case something goes wrong. Apart the benefit you may get from Window, this Toshiba is fast and has got all the interface you basically need!

Well about the battery I have noticed that it may last about 3hours (while typing some php script and so on)

If you are thinking to install another OS on it i.e.Linux, you may experience some trouble.

I bought this machine for my sister, who needed a laptop badly. I choose the Toshiba brand because I currently own one for a few years and I don't have problems. First and foremost the specs on this machine and the price attracted my attention. Then when I received the product from Amazon, whose delivery service is out of this world, I couldn't believe how light the machine was for the size and the keyboard is just muaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!! Makes me want to type a thousand words per minute. Having the full number keyboard at the side like a calculator was also great. Great machine for the price!!!!!!!!!!!

This laptop is nice, perfect size for my lap. It is not difficult, this is a plus, since it states that it is five pounds. Processor runs fairly smooth, fast. It has a webcam, I do not know why every site that I have to say about this model is that it works. These are for $ 100 less than Office Depot. Overall, this notebook is ideal for everyday use.

i was very dissapointed when i received this laptop for not having a webcam. i know, i suppose to check its features first but almost every laptop and netbooks these days are coming with a webcam... why not this one has it?????????

This laptop is cute, perfect size on my lap. It's not heavy at all, which is a plus since it states that it's 5 lbs. Processor runs fairly smooth, fast. It does NOT have a webcam, I don't know why every website I searched up about this model says that it does. I got this for 0 less at Office Depot. Overall, this laptop is great for everyday use.

Great Buy except for...
It has no WEB CAM as indicated above. i'm enjoying all the features it has however. great buy for this price!

This machine had a little more than I intended to spend on a school computer, but when I looked around me, just was not enough to point my price $ 500 U.S.. So I know my budget until the eighteenth century and that the right fit in I must say that I saw on all the machines I've found at this price … much. This was somewhat surprising in terms of hardware … yet, as the price. It 'performed better than expected.

I was used for aOnly a few weeks now pretty strong and I do not really have many complaints. Okay, here is the screen, but I knew that had defects back, I'm using this for documents, research, tables, etc., in well lit. The fact that the screen is fantastic. But he has a weakness, as many have said. And it's a pretty sweet little place up and down. side by side there is also much more variety. It is not really a problem since I have my hands on the machine is very simple …Tilt the screen when I change position. Movies look much better than I thought it would. But do not monitor this, deep blacks. Although I am used well, opaque screens do not know how to find some creepy things reported. Yes, a matte screen would be nice, but it is not an option. I had no problem in different lighting situations. So yes, it is not the best picture you'll see out there. But I do not need a full-range monitor for school. I have ahome. But here is the screen is not so bad.

This machine is fast enough. Should I build my desktop gaming platforms every few years and this installation / application is as fast. Well, I tried to play all games on this rig yet, but if, as is running Google Earth is any indication, I think probably impressed. GE works perfectly on paper, and quite well on integrated graphicsexhausted with all the settings. Photoshop installed quickly. And this machine, it works quite well. Not me reference points, but some rendering speed, getting comfortable with the speed. What can I say? I'm impressed. He chews up your RAW files as large a sample. This stuff, however, leaves gaps monitor. I will not do much photo editing like color / exposure is not concerned about an external monitor. But it lacks the speed to crunch large files.

4 GB of DDR3.

Love the touch pad. It's a bit 'delicate, but I always used to.

Battery life. This is what really sold me on this machine. And it does work for 10 + hours in economy mode power. And how low-power enough to all the work I do. You can use the web for about as long on one charge and surf. The battery life alone makes the screen. And the screen is not so bad if it is spoiled. Then again, if failed,Why are you looking for a machine this cheap? It takes 2 1 / 2 hours later in a fully charged battery from complete discharge.

Tiny Footprint. There is not much bigger than a netbook have the power of a decent desktop!

Optical drive. Okay, I say … The film occasionally. And this machine is very good for this. And most of my films is available on DVD. It 'nice to be able to pull' em along, or have something to play with a friend. Just hold still … it can not be very happy to movewheel with a disc. Besides this, most of my software on CD / DVD. The unit only makes life much easier. This was also another plus point for me.

nice collection of ports. As HDMI. Lieber was, unlike DVI VGA. Err, you know, I could return it. The VGA monitor with much older when HDMI is working with some new works and more modern televisions. Okay, maybe VGA was the right choice.

Card Reader is a nice gesture.

Great keyboard. I did not have any flex in the frame, as some have reported. Then again, I'm too much pressure there.

Stays pretty cool for hours in her lap.

Warranty! 1 year, almost everything is out of the box. Then another year after the normal warranty. I have dealt with in the past with an Asus motherboard burned on players. It 'was by far one of the best ever RMA. LOVE Asus support. ThatThe experience was an important reason that I bought an Asus machine.

Do not like it?

Webcam. Hate webcam on laptops. Always feel that I have seen. It 'was painted over. But this is picky … I am sure that someone appreciates it.

Bloatware. Some are not and do not have time to reinstall everything. It does not look as though it seems a bit 'slow, but I would prefer that only they gave me a disc I will not … prompted to install myThroat. And the initial setup was quite long.

Many adhesives. But the downside is that it covers the stuff your webcam directly from the window to have;).

It seems to me to be careful with the screen.

You only do this once, but I had the machine kicked on his knees in bed with his legs before me. Then I opened them. The hinges are twice as small scissors if you do this. It 'was unfortunate. But again, you will probably only makeagain;)

In general, I could not be happier with the car. J & R has here in 3 days with standard shipping! Yes, there are small niggles with each machine. They are all a compromise. But there are many positive things about this machine is hard to live in one of their weaknesses … especially in this price range. It is simply an incredible value with a great warranty company and return it. All that said, this machine has earned a solid five stars. It would be sevenwith a better screen.

Great laptop
It's pretty, light and the battery can stand for a long time. Everything is working very well so far (purchased for a month). I will recommend this one to everyone.

Awesome machine for the price point
This machine was a little more than I had intended to spend on a school machine, but when I started looking around, my five hundred dollar price point just wasn't enough. So I bumped my budget up to seven hundred and this one fit right in. I will say that I looked at all the machines I could find at that price...quite a few. And this one looked pretty amazing from a hardware standpoint...again, considering the price. It has performed better than expected.

I've been using it for a few weeks now pretty heavily and I just don't really have many complaints. Okay, there's the screen, but I knew it had shortcomings going in. Again, I'm using this for papers, research, spreadsheets, etc in well-lit environments. For that the screen is fantastic. But it does have a sweet spot as many have mentioned. And it's a pretty small sweet spot up and down. Side to side gives alot more latitude. And it's not really an issue since I already have my hands on the machine...pretty easy to tilt the screen if I change positions. Movies look alot better than I thought they would. But this monitor doesn't do deep blacks. Even though I'm used to good, matte monitors I still don't find it ghastly as some have reported. Yeah, a matte screen would be nice, but it's not an option. I still haven't had any issues in several different lighting situations. So yeah, this isn't the best screen you're gonna see out there. But I don't need a full-gamut monitor for school. I have one at home. But again, the screen isn't that bad.

That said, how about some pros and cons:

Likes:

This machine's pretty fast. I build my own gaming desktop rigs every few years and this one installs/runs applications just as fast. Now, I haven't tried to play any games on this rig yet, but if the way it runs Google Earth is any indication, I think I'll probably be impressed. It runs GE flawlessly on the card and still pretty well on the integrated graphics with all the settings maxed out. Photoshop installed quickly. And this machine runs it quite nicely. I haven't benchmarked anything, but did a couple of quick renderings to get a feel for the speed. What can I say? I'm impressed. It chomps up big raw files like a champ. This stuff, however, brings out the monitor's deficiencies. I won't be doing much photo editing as color/exposure is concerned without an external monitor. But it doesn't lack the speed to crunch big files.

4 gigs of DDR3.

Love the touchpad. It's a little sensitive, but I'm getting used to it.

Battery life. This is what really sold me on this machine. And it really does run for 10+ hours in power save mode. And power save mode is enough for all the work I'm doing. You can browse the web for about that long on a charge as well. The battery life alone makes up for the screen. And the screen really isn't that bad unless you're spoiled. Then again if you're spoiled, why are you looking at a machine this cheap? Takes 2 1/2 hours to fully recharge from full discharge.

Tiny footprint. It's not much bigger than a netbook yet has the power of a decent desktop!

Optical drive. Okay, I'll fess up...I watch movies now and again. And this machine is pretty good for that. And most of my movies are on DVD. It's nice to be able to drag 'em along or play something a friend has. Just keep it still... it doesn't like being moved around much with a disc spinning. Other than that, most of my software is on CD/DVD. The drive just makes life so much easier. This was also another selling point for me.

Nice collection of ports. Really like the HDMI. Would have preferred DVI as opposed to a VGA. Err, you know, I might take that back. The VGA will work with much older monitors where HDMI works with some new ones and most modern TVs. Okay, so maybe VGA was the right choice.

Card reader is a nice touch.

Great keyboard. I haven't experienced any sort of flex in the chassis as some have reported. Then again, I don't typically put much pressure there.

Stays pretty cool for hours on end in your lap.

Warranty! 1 year almost anything goes out of the box. Then another year of just regular warranty after that. I've dealt with Asus in the past with a burned motherboard on a gamer. It was by the far one of the most pleasant RMAs ever. LOVE Asus support. That experience was a big reason I bought an Asus machine.

Dislikes?

Webcam. I hate webcams on laptops. Always feel like I'm being watched. It got painted over. But this is just picky...I'm sure someone appreciates them.

Bloatware. Some won't come off and I don't have the time to reinstall everything. It doesn't seem like it's slowing anything down, but I'd prefer to just have it given to me on a disk to install at my will...not shoved down my throat. And it made the initial setup kinda long.

Too many stickers. But the flipside is that you have the stuff to cover up your webcam right out of the box ;).

I feel like I have to be careful with the screen.

You'll only do this once, but I had the machine on my lap in the bed with my legs kicked out in front of me. Then I opened it. The hinges double as little crab claws when you do this. It was unpleasant. But again, you'll probably only do this once ;)

Overall, I couldn't be happier with the machine. J&R got it here in 3 business days with standard shipping! Yeah, there are little niggles with every machine. They're all a compromise. But there are so many positives to this machine, it's hard to dwell on any of its shortcomings...particularly in this price range. It's simply an amazing value with a great warranty and company to back it. All that said, this machine has earned itself a solid five stars. It'd get seven with a better screen.

great as advertised, but with horrible touchpad!!
I did a lot of research and finally settled on this laptop, but ended up returning it a week later.

Pros:
- It is really thin and light...very portable.
- The battery life is excellent. I used it for an entire day without having to charge it.
- The speakers are on the front edge of the laptop. I love this, because you can shut your laptop and still listen to music.
- Build quality was good - it feels and looks like lightweight metal outside - light but durable. I also liked the chiclet style keys. It was comfortable to use.

Cons:
- Trackpad and buttons were awful!
* The buttons for clicking were VERY hard to push down. I'm not sure if it's just a flaw with my particular unit or not, because in the store, it wasn't that bad to click, but I've also read other reviews with my same complaint. It might be hit or miss.
* I also had the problem where once in a while, I'd try to click something using the button and nothing would happen. It just wouldn't work. I had to use the double tap to click to get around that.
* Multitouch is awful. Because the buttons were so difficult to press I was very reliant on the multitouch but sadly it didn't work well either. The 2 finger scroll is very finicky. It'll start a second after you do the gesture, and then scroll super fast all the way to the bottom of the page. You can adjust the sensitivity settings, which does help. But it's still not very intuitive to use. Also, your fingers have to scroll exactly perpendicularly up/down for it to work. If your fingers are on a slight angle, nothing will happen. I was constantly accidentally clicking or dragging things that I didn't mean to, which was very annoying. It takes so much longer to do anything because you can't navigate anything comfortably.
- Speed. It wasn't terribly fast. It worked at an acceptable speed, but I did find myself waiting longer that I'd expect for things (e.g. firefox, word, other common programs etc.) to open on a new unit and I imagine it'd only get slower with time.
- No 1 touch media buttons. In general, I don't like having a bunch of useless shortcut buttons on the keyboard like some other laptops do. However, I do use the dedicated one-touch buttons for music (i.e. play/pause, volume, mute etc.). This Asus has shortcut buttons that involve holding the Fn button with another key that does the action. The problem is that the keys are far apart, so you have to use both hands to hold down both keys to do a simple action like mute your music. Small gripe.

Over all, I really wanted to like this computer...it has a lot of nice features, and portability was very important to me as a commuter student. But the trackpad was just impossible and drove me crazy. Seeing as I'm on my laptop several hours a day, the frustration wasn't worth it and I returned it. Got an Acer TimelineX instead.

Battery Life Only 3 Hours
I bought this computer for two reasons:

Its weight and battery life.

After I installed a VPN client,system crashed. Called technical support, after holding for about half hour, the technician asked me to recover the system from the disk.

Battery life is realistic about 3-4 hours. Definitely not 11.5 hours. It's cheating. Users should ask Asus to provide third party certificate to show their claim of 11.5 hours of battery life is not misleading. Without the difference with other 0-0 computers for battery life, its price is way too high. I would not recommend to purchase this computer.

Best Laptop for Me So Far
I love this laptop. Before buying it I ready read the reviews on Amazon.com. Most of them were good and it turned out the be true. This laptop is very thin and light. This is what I like the most. So far the only thing that did not totally meet my expectation is the battery life. Some say the battery lasts 12 hours but after using it for about two weeks, I found out it only lasts about 6 hours after fully charged; however this is just a minor issue (to be honest, it is better than many other laptops already). Everything else meets my expectation.
