The only complaint is that it was a bit 'bad, until I upgraded the memory. I have only 526 MB is replaced with a 1GB stick. I work with about 1.5 GB of memory and everything is fine now.

Many functions and external contacts I havent yet used. It 's really a slot for my memory card digital camerafirst, to avoid having wonderful to find that cable to upload pictures from video ads.

Save your money!
I own this model and wish I had purchased a MacBook instead. My unit was shipped with Vista (which crashes all the time) I contacted Toshiba about a disk to "upgrade" it back down to XP and was shocked to learn that they can't help me as they didn't make the software so I should contact Microsoft (who told me to call Toshiba) with Vista problems. Nice! So unless you like LOTS OF PROBLEMS with NO SUPPORT don't waste your hard earned money on anything running Vista. After so many lock ups and a few total restores, I gave up and purchased an IMac. WOW! I wish I had done this years ago. I'll be happy to purchase another Toshiba when they ship it with the Mac OS.

I like it,
I like it, awesome display, monitor is great, very clear crisp, great color. Sound is pretty good, not as good as my HIFI home system, but best I ever had in a laptop.

Only complaint is that it was a little buggy until I upgraded the memory. I only replaced one of the 526 mb with a 1GB stick. I am running about 1.5 gb memory and its all good now.

Lots of features, and plugs on the outside I havent even used yet. It has a card slot for my digi camera memory card right in front, nice not having to find that cable to upload video ad pics.

Not enough RAM, no XP drivers
This is an adequate computer, but not for serious work. The hardware is solid and the battery life at almost 90 minutes is OK if you are close to a power outlet. Not for field use or air travel. Sleep mode actually works well, consuming very little battery power while allowing quick resumption of work upon opening the case again. The WiFi is good at capturing weak signals and the 4 USB ports are a plus. The SD card reader is extremely handy for direct transfer of digital camera files, etc. The speakers are excellent, as good as many external speaker systems, but the external volume control is software controlled, so cannot be used to prevent noisy bootup in public places. Always mute the speakers before shutdown. The Vista operating system slows this solid, well designed hardware system to a maddening crawl. Windows Vista is an operating system that should be taken for a long ride into the country then left on the side of the road. The recommended fix is to dump Vista and upgrade to Windows XP Pro, but the primary components in this laptop have no XP drivers, so that is not an option. If you buy this computer you are stuck with Vista, with slow loading apps, slow graphics, and constant lock-ups due to inadequate RAM. I plan to toss the 2 512MB SODIMM's and install 2GB or 4GB RAM. I have been able to use this machine on business trips and it is an adequate appliance, but not the joy to use that it should be.

Worthless battery life
I have just one thing to say about my Toshiba Satellite, and I presume this extends to all of Toshiba's laptops: the battery is worthless. It never lasted more than an hour and a half when I got it new and quickly deteriorated until now when it barely lasts 15 minutes. I know laptop batteries wear out, but I've also used IBM laptops at work for many years and those batteries always last for several hours even when they are old (as many as 4 hours!). So if you care about battery life, don't get Toshiba.

A few minor goofs, but all in all, a very stable and professional system
This was an emergency purchase for me, as my old laptop finally gave up the ghost after 5 long years of abuse, and I needed a new one for work. So far, the A205-S4577 has kept up with both work and home. Video is remarkably clear, and controls are nice. Toshiba's add-ons are a bit of a nuisance, and needed to be disabled, and the keyboard takes a little bit of getting used to (I couldn't, however, tell you why -- it just doesn't *feel* quite right at first), but all in all, I'm very happy with my purchase.

Tablet common characteristics – good, but not much.
I like the notes in different colored pens, with the ability to add notes in the "pen" and the distance between lines already written was deleted. I use the Journal and the spring for the to-do lists or short articles. For longer documents, I prefer to give. While the tee network, I finduncomfortable to write the input box for the web address to open and search and then click the "Enter" or "go. I used a Pocket PC for a number of years and often try to use the shortcuts the same input on the laptop does not. I get the connections between pen input on Tablet and Pocket PCs confused. I love many of the "Power Toys" games, which offered free from Microsoft. I use my pen to play these games. So far I do not use a lot of OneNote. ItI am forced to use another methophore to organize my files (from several folders into a single, very large binders). This is really uncomfortable for me because I have lots of folders and subfolders have been organized. I reorganized a small project in a wallet, but I do not think I transferred several files in the format of OneNote. I usually with the pen as a pointing device with full access to the keyboard mode handset. I find the pen easily if I move a lotFile to (especially in FrontPage).

I have a fully configured desktop computer at home with 2 Ghz 17 "LCD monitor and a real keyboard. The M200 is great, but not with a full desktop user interface. I use it in the office.

Machine specific contribution:
The screen has a bad glow mode Tablet when in my office, where ceiling lights are just above my desk. Glare is not a problem at home, where a table lamp sits next to the laptop. AllThe colors fade when I get a bad shine. The screen is a very high resolution, if there is wonderful light. The pen feels smooth and soft when you scroll the screen. Keyboard is very good! Love the bubble-comfortable feeling. The audio recording is amazing. He built noise-canceling microphones with three children in the display bezel. Music sounds very good through plug-in headphones. Built-in speaker (mono) is strong and good enough to be heard recorded conversations. Has avery high number of ports, including a slot for SD cards. It 'very fast, even with modest memory (I have version Dolthan). Fast Ethernet is not (yet proven wireless). Battery seems to be about 4 hours of continuous use to light last year. Overall, it feels solid and well built. The hard disk angered, continuous, pop, if this is the first time. But after I shut down some processes and energy options twicked (and Windows has been optimized), I do not feel theCrackle so often. I'm not using a CD / DVD may be a pain, but I found it easy to set up another desktop with a CD / DVD, to put it on the network share. I thought the weight would be 4.5 pounds too heavy, but I can not find it so bad. I'm glad I bought a hybrid instead of a slate model, since I'm not much with the pen. Apart from the tablet, the M200 is equipped with a laptop very well made high performance with a fantastic screen (right angle). But ifWere excluded from the tablet functions, I could have received a £ 2.4 laptop (Toshiba R100) or a laptop with a built £ 3 CD / DVD (Panasonic W2). So, I gave only four stars, but I think I have the right choice. I learn more from the features compressed into the future, as I use them more control, grow, and I use it occasionally now.

Good solid laptop - tablet hybrid
I got my M200 several months ago and am very satisfied with it.
However, I use it less than I had anticipated, so I only gave it 4 stars.

Common Tablet Features - neat, but not much used.
I enjoy taking notes in different colored pens, with the ability to erase notes written in "pen" and to add space between lines already written. I use the Journal and the pen for to-do items or short lists. For longer documents, I prefer to type. While suring the web, I find it inconvenient to have to open the input panel to write the web address, and then to look for and peck the "enter" or "go" button. I have used a pocket-pc for a number of years and often attempt to use the same input shortcuts on the laptop which do not work. I get confused between the pen input shortcuts on the tablet and the pocket-pc. I really love many of the "power toys" games that were offered free by Microsoft. I use my pen to play these games. So far, I do not use OneNote much. It forces me to use a different methophore to organize my files (from many folders to a single, very large, binder). This is really inconvenient for me because I have a lot of folders and subfolders already organized. I have reorganized one small project into a binder, but I don't think I will be transfering over more files into the OneNote format. I most often use the pen as a pointing device with full access to the keyboard in the "laptop" mode. I find the pen easier when I am moving a lot of files around (especially in FrontPage).

I have a fully configured desktop 2 Ghz machine at home with 17" LCD monitor and real keyboard. The M200 is great, but does not match user-interface with a full desktop. I do use it more at the office.

Machine specific review:
The screen has a bad glare in "tablet" mode when I am at my office where ceiling lights are directly over my desk. Glare is not an issue at home where a table lamp sits next to the laptop. All the colors seem to be washed out when I get a bad glare. The screen is wonderful with a very high resolution when there is no glare. The pen feels silky smooth when it glides on the screen. Keyboard is excellent! Love the cushy bubble-like feel. Audio recording is amazing. It has noise-cancelling through 3 tiny microphones build into the screen bezel. Music sounds very good through plug-in headphones. Built-in speaker (mono) is loud and good enough for hearing recorded conversations. It has a very extensive set of ports including an SD card slot. It is very fast, even with modest memory (I have the Dolthan version). Ethernet connection is fast (have not tries wireless yet). Battery seems to last about 4 hours of continuous light use. Overall, it feels solidly and well built. The hard disk made annoying, continuous, clicking sounds when I first got it. But after I turned some processes off and twicked power save options (and windows has optimized itself) I don't hear the clickings as often. I thought not having a CD/DVD drive might be a pain, but I found it to be easy to set up another desktop with a CD/DVD drive to share it on the network. I thought the 4.5 lbs weight might be too heavy but I find it to be not too bad. I am glad I bought a hybrid instead of a slate model, since I am not using the pen very much. Setting aside the tablet features, the M200 is a very well made high performance laptop with an amazing screen (in the right viewing angle). But if I were to exclude the tablet features, I could have gotten a 2.4 lb laptop (Toshiba R100) or a 3 lb laptop with a built-in CD/DVD drive (Panasonic W2). So, I gave it only 4 stars, but I still think I made the right choice. I may learn to use more of the tablet features in the future as I grow more proficient at it, and I use it occassionally now.

A breakthrough technology, sign of things to come.
This thing is amazing. Since I got it a month ago I no longer touch either of my desktops and I nearly stopped using paper (I mean, to write on!). Superb 1400x1050 resolution exceeds anything you find useable on a desktop monitor. The tablet mode is great, too, with high resolution, intuitive interface and a comfortable pen. I write equations a lot, which is basically impossible with just a keyboard and a mouse, so the tablet mode is very handy. Handwriting recognition is very good, not that it matters, since most people type faster than they write, anyway. Speach recognition is also built in, but I never bothered to train it properly, and it's useless without training. Microphone and (monoaural)speaker are good enough for Skype and MSN Messenger, but not for watching DVD movies. Which is a moot point since there is no built-in optical drive of any kind. Had to buy an external USB 2.0 DVD-RW. No Firewire port, either. Can't have everything. Not yet anyway. Battery life is good, about 4 hours in the long-life mode, enough for most domestic flights, if you hate the inflight movies. The wow factor is fun, too, no question, especially when I take handwritten notes on it. I wish this tablet was thinner, as it's hard to write on a surface a full inch above the table level, so I either prop its far side with something, or simply keep it on my laps. It gets a bit hot at full power, but quite nice in the long-life mode. Built-in wireless networking is 802.11b, not .g, which is good enough for now.As this technology matures (thinner, slide-out keyboard, more tablet-friendly apps etc.) it will likely displace both regular laptops and pure tablets, since the price difference is not that high.

I love mine! it works great my only problem is that it has to have an external cd drive, otherwise it is amazing. As a student ai use it to take notes which i can later convert into text, to make nice, neat, and readable notes.

broke down the week I got it
Toshiba is the worst! The computer broke down the first week I got it, and all Toshiba assistance could do in FOUR months from them is to tell me to bring it to THREE different places to get it repaired!!!

I wrote "Absolute Beginner's Guide to Tablet PCs". I reviewed lots of different Tablet PCs, and this is the one I use. It has the highest-resolution screen, good disk space, zippy performance, and lots of extra features.If you want the fastest Tablet PC with lots of screen real estate and portability, the M200 is the one for you. I had a Toshiba Portege 3500 before this one, and the M200 is definitely a step up.I have purchased ten Toshiba Tablet PCs for my company, and none of them have broken. The M200 is a more stable machine than the Portege 3500,though.Great job, Toshiba!

Now, we talk about this netbook. The keyboard is near life size, which makes it possible to type damned. The churn 80wpm on a normal keyboard and to get to this speed on this netbook. There are some compromises, however. The touch pad has buttons on the v / s top, as most netbooks and laptops. The arrow keys are smaller than normal keys.There are no special home-key and fn key now requires two keys (left arrow). Most people do not notice, but could be for users to have a problem.

Speaking of power comes, this netbook with a battery 3CELL. It's good for quick trips, but if you want long term, the power to shoot a 6-cell battery or better. The battery compartment is located at the bottom of the unit for easy access. RAM can also be updated on the bottom.

The display is very crisp.10.2 inches sounds small, but Windows XP, 1024×600 resolution is thus higher than expected. Movies look great on her. The display has a reflective coating on it (do not know the more technical name).

A little 'few annoyances with this netbook. The Webcam requires a lot of background light, only to get a halfway decent. There is a connector for an external monitor, but the device was not included. HP charges for them. The touchpad includes a generousRoom for scrolling. Almost too generous. Approximately three quarters of an inch pad reserved for scrolling a page. Fortunately, can use the software.

In general, this is a fun 1033CL netbooks. It is not the fastest or most feature packed, but the sharp display, nearly full-size keyboard, and make the device sound this stand out from competitors. I'm glad I bought it. Portability, is addictive. I take it in the kitchen, the bedroom, theGarage, porch, garden and more.

Not just inexpensive, cheap
I was looking forward to the netbook experience. My biggest fear was that my big hands wouldn't be able to navigate the keyboard. That turned out not to be the problem. So what IS the problem?

This pc is pathetically slow, it locks up frequently. I might have only 3 tabs open in Firefox and the stupid thing stops working. If it can't run a browser then what good is it?

Using the Windows programs isn't much better. Word gives the same pathetic performance (fits and starts). Netbooks are supposed to be for convenience but if you can't get anything done, what's the point?

The batter life is good but nothing spectacular. This isn't a huge issue but the fan is far too loud as well.

This machine would chase a lot of people away from a netbook. I probably should just chalk it up to typical HP quality.

More bang for the buck
Finding anything on this specific Hewlett Packard HP Mini 110-1033CL was a challenge. My wife just bought one for my Grandson from COSTCO and it appears to have more features than were available in the past. For one, it has a 160GB SATA hard drive, and for another the standard battery is a 6 cell which lasts way longer than the smaller 3 cell. I haven't had much time to work with this machine but the display is fairly bright and the keyboard easy to use. My only concern was how long Microsoft plans to continue supporting Windows XP. I may turn it back in in a couple of months if HP comes out with a mini that has Windows 7 loaded, along with 4 GB of ram to make it work correctly. I suspect it will cost more as well.

The portability is addictive. Netbook goes everywhere.
It is hard to believe that HP and other netbook makers packed so many features into such a small package. This HP netbook is a little bigger than the average DVD case. It is TINY...and slim too. At 2lbs and some change, you can carry this thing all day long and not even notice the weight.

The features in the 1033CL match up with other netbooks on the market. The hard drive is a bit smaller than average - 60GB v/s 120GB. This model comes with 1GB RAM v/s 2GB RAM on most Vista-enabled netbooks. Not deal breakers by any means...but savy shoppers can get more bang for their netbook dollars.

Now, let's talk about this netbook. The keyboard is darn near full-sized which makes touch typing possible. I crank out 80wpm on a regular keyboard and can get near that speed on this netbook. There are a few compromises though. The touchpad has buttons on either side v/s on top like most netbooks and laptops. The arrow keys are smaller than regular keys. There is no dedicated home key and now requires two keys be pressed (fn-left arrow). Most people won't notice it but power users might have an issue.

The speaker sits directly above the keyboard and sounds great! Some laptops and netbooks put the speakers under the unit or in the palmrest (so your hand covers it!) but HP got it right. Volume is loud and sound is full. Not tinny.

The 1033CL has plenty of ports. Power, USB, headphone/mic, and Ethernet are on the left. Another USB port and a smartcard slot are on the right. The front has buttons for power and for turning off the wireless network card. (great for saving power)

Speaking of power, this netbook comes with a 3cell battery. It is good for quick trips but if you want long-term power, shoot for a 6 cell battery or better. The battery compartment is in the bottom of the unit for easy access. RAM can also be upgraded via the bottom of the unit.

Overall, the 1033CL is a fun netbook. It isn't the fastest or packed with the most features but the crisp display, the almost full-sized keyboard, and the audio make this unit stand out among competitors. I'm happy I bought it. The portability of it is just addictive. I take it to the kitchen, the bedroom, the garage, the front porch, backyard and more.

Good for some things, not for everything
In addition to the HP, I have an Asus eee, which runs Linux and has a keyboard that's just a little too small for sustained typing. The HP Mini 1033CL has a very nice keyboard and good screen resolution. I added an external optical drive and loaded MS Office with no problem.

However, for whatever reason, HP saw fit not to include a VGA port. Instead, there is an "expansion slot" that claims to carry VGA output (though an incoherent HP representative told me that it did not). HP does not yet sell a cable or adapter for this bizarre proprietary expansion slot. Thus, if you buy this machine for its portability, hoping it will reduce your luggage on business trips, as I did, you must also hope that your business does not require you to use your computer to project PowerPoint. Sadly, my business travel always requires this, and is a key reason I would sacrifice the ease of a full-sized laptop for a mini. Therefore, until such time as HP releases a proprietary connector to provide a normally-standard output dock, I will be traveling with my eee. I'd rather take the HP, but it is useless if I can't project.

Nice little laptop for traveling
I love this laptop! it's so miniature and light-weight. I just toss it in my back pack and off I go. I also have a wireless air card which I got from AT&T, so I had get 24-7 internet anywhere. There's also many wifi hotspots nowdays to take advantage of free internet.

I'm going to Japan in a couple months. I plan to put the laptop in hibernate mode, and when I need to look up a restaurant, or places to go, or translate something, I'll have the resource with me.

Things I didn't like about the laptop:
The laptop could use a built-in bluetooth. The laptop taskbar had a bluetooth icon, but it says it's disabled, but I might get one of those miniature blueTooth dongles that sitcks out only a few millimeters. I think HP could've put in a couple more USB ports, so I carry around a USB hub just in case. Other than that, you should consider this laptop. I give it a 9.5/10 for this laptop.

Nice for the Price But with Surprising Omissions
I got this LT at a very good price. It looks nice and has a great keyboard, but the touchpad will require "tweak to touch and taste", it has a lot of adjustment options. I was able to adjust mine for great response. This unit is fast enough for everything I've tried so far. It looks good and feels well built. However it has some surprising omissions, namely no webcam, no bluetooth, and only two USB ports! Each of these items of themselves are surprising, but all three?? This is practically unheard of these days. Also be aware that both memory slots contain 1 GB each which means you would need to get a 2 GB memory module in order to upgrade to 3 GB, etc. This unit is also somewhat noisy at times, and gets quite warm in operation. However if these items are not a problem for you then you should be quite pleased with this LT.

C655-S5048 REVIEW
I got this on sale at Office Depot for 0 yesterday. It works ok so far except for a few minor things. If you notice, a lot of recent laptops stopped using keys with beveled edges. The new ones are mostly flat and not as easy to type with. I think it's to cut costs. The mouse on this computer seems to be a little goofy. It will not let you keep two fingers on the mouse at the same time, it will freeze the mouse. Also the mouse seems to pause a lot and the arrow sometimes disappears for a few seconds. Also the mouse pad is offset from the center of the computer to the left side of the computer so you have to reach over with the right hand to use it. That's a little uncomfortable. I can't figure any reason why they did that. They've lowered the height of the screen by an inch so the new format is wider than previously. That again is a puzzlement to me because webpages are typically taller and narrower. But all the newer computers are doing it. It's too bad that the designers can't resist changing things all the time. My previous computer was a Compaq F700. Except for the annoying Vista, that was a great computer with a really good mouse in the right place and a comfortable screen size.

Got this laptop at best buy for 9 what a steal! Anyway has a lot of options and the key pad layout is very comfortable. Love the 10 key on it/wish all laptops had them. Comes with an sd card slot which is a bonus for me. I dislike hooking up the camera to everything.
WINDOWS 7...Much better than Vista system by far. Your email does not come pre-loaded and you need to set it up with windows live but what a difference. Has a fun solitare game and microsoft word that is nice to have.
I haven't had this long but I don't regret the purchase. You can't buy a cheap net book for what I paid. Nice big bright screen and will work great for home use.
Hopefully for all new technology will be affordable for everyone. Just FYI no modem so those whom need one should look at something different.

Awesome Buy
I've had this Laptop for a week now and I love it more everyday. I was very surprised at just how fast it is. I'm the type of person that tries to do 10 things at once and I love that I can have 10 different pages open going back and forth and the Laptop zooms right alone with me. A Hugh plus in my book is the number pad, when your use to a desktop keyboard and start using a Laptop it is a wonderful feature. To be completely fair there is one flaw the built in speaker is very low, but if you use headphones it has a great sound. So, for the money this is a GREAT Laptop. I still can't believe all is has to offer for such a low price.

First, we set the parameter. This is not a multi-core machine with a Pentium high-end graphics card. It is not intended for running faster processor-intensive applicationsthan any other computer on the market. Most of you have one of these machines compute-intensive already at home, or maybe a high-end laptops with all the support power-intensive. This is a "netbook" which means a low-end laptops, which can be used for basic functions like Web browsing, e-mail, view pictures and some children.

This is a bit 'misleading, because if you read the description as expected, the HP Mini 1000 is essentially a power to be "dog" youManage only a Web browser, and perhaps Picasa. I can tell, this is a real mistake.

There is no doubt that one of the lightest and smallest of your computer has ever seen, but surprisingly also one of the vigorous implementation of the laptop, probably are in the price range (and speaking of money, is basically a steal between $ 400 and $ 500, I had two other laptops long ago that both were sub-£ 3 devices, and each cost about $ 3,000). I went ahead and justgambling load all a trial version of Microsoft Office 2007 (Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, etc.) and then just piled on other applications that normally use on my regular laptop (a dual core processor T8100 HP dv2000 in the body), including Image Viewer, utilities, etc.. Surprise. It is not only treated all software, but it works surprisingly well programs with little delay and surprisingly agile performance. The Intel Atom processor behind this thing can be simpleseen as a "sleeper technology, people always talk.

startup time is also surprisingly fast. Mine usually loaded within 20 seconds, certainly faster than my "powerful laptop. Of course, the Mini is running Windows XP, Vista, but still, this is quite impressive. (By the way, I installed Windows 7 RC1, and it worked fine.)

The wireless is working without problems. I connect to my network at home with the security settings on high, andpublic places with open networks, all without any problems so far. (The device does not support Draft-N specifications, so that you can connect at speeds g).

The physical construction of this device is excellent. Yes, it is small and light. But it is also robust, as it feels a little squeak and a solid construction. The screen is bright and clear. And the keyboard is one of the best I've seen in any laptop. How did they do?

Finally, if youfeelsmall size and weight of the battery as it would be out of the box, is expected to run for 30 minutes plans. Now, with the power Atom processor sip volume is very low, you'll probably see about 90 to 120 minutes on a single charge. It 'pretty amazing.

You can probably tell, I am impressed with this device, because they are. If this is the beginning of "netbook", then I think that will become more popular, as we discovered.

Fine for almost a year...
I bought this netbook from Verizon last August. A couple of days ago, the wireless card stopped working. Brought it in to Verizon and they told me it was an HP problem. Called HP and was also connected by phone with a verizon rep, reached a guy in India. He told us it was out of warranty although it is not. The verizon rep had my purchase date on her screen and I had a printed reciept. He would not help us at all and refused to put a supervisor on the phone. Finally hung up and did some research. It seems that the wireless card on thousands of HP machines do not last long. Then they want you to replace the mother board etc. A total rip off. A scam. The machine itself works just fine BUT CAN'T CONNECT TO THE NET. Verizon says if I want to cancel my wireless account I have to pay 0. I have a useless machine and am being "held hostage" by the company that sold it to me and HP will not even speak with me after holding me on the phone for over an hour. Their customer service is horrid and they do not back up faulty products.

I see a lot of positive feedback on this product from customers who have just purchased them and I would have given this product a good review after I first got it too. If the manufacturer won't honor their warranty and won't give you any customer service, buyer, be VERY AWARE. DO SOME RESEARCH ON HP PRODUCTS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE BEFORE BUYING. Incredibly slow and unresponsive machine...not worth the money
I was in search of a laptop but didn't have much money, so I looked into getting a netbook. All I needed was a machine to do word processing and surf the internet, so my expectations were pretty low. This machine doesn't even do that effectively...it is incredibly slow and crashes constantly doing basic tasks, like opening a web-page. I would highly suggest you just invest a little more money and get an actual laptop.

Do not buy this HP!!!
This machine was adorable, until it died after three months. The hard drive just failed. It is now lost somewhere in Texas...under warranty, but HP sent it to the wrong address and doesn't seem to be able to find it. Their service is beyond horrible. You call somewhere in India, who calls Texas, and I am not sure which is less in touch with reality.

My next computer will be a Mac...or purchased from some company who has a clue.

Great value with limitations
I've been using this computer for several months now.

Compared to a smart phone at 0, this computer at half the price is a great value. It's amazingly light weight and it does everything a laptop does.

Although it has a real keyboard, it is necessarily a bit smaller than a normal computer, and I find myself making frequent typos. Annoyingly, it has keys marked "home" and "end," but they only work as cursor keys -- I've tried every keystroke combination I can think of and they're still just cursor keys. So I have to scroll to find the beginning and ending of documents or posts.

The display is a bit pale, particularly so on battery. There is no display adjustment possible.

The main problem, though, was HP Support. I have the mobile version of the Mini, with a built-in broadband card, and my computer kept trying to connect to it which resulted in error messages; at one point, I was getting several error messages per minute. Neither email nor phone support was able to help me with this problem despite many emails and a long time on the phone. It finally resolved itself.

RAM is limited to 1 G; it's not expandable.

This is a great computer for travel, absolutely fabulous. But lately I've been using it as a substitute for my big laptop which is in the shop, and I find myself getting frustrated with it.

A Real Breakthough Technology (and I Mean that Seiously)
I've been using this HP Mini 1000 Netbook for a while now, and decided to write a review for Amazon because I'm so impressed with the device. If you are considering a "Netbook" like this, chances are you've never owned one, and are perhaps a bit skeptical about the device. So was I.

First off, let's set the parameters. This isn't a multi-core Pentium processor machine with a high end dedicated graphics card. It isn't meant for running the most processor intensive applications faster than any other computer on the market. Most of you have one of these number-crunching machines at home already, or perhaps a high-end laptop with all the power-intensive support. This is a "Netbook," which means a slimmed down laptop that can be used for basic functions, such as web browsing, e-mail, and some minor picture viewing.

That's a bit deceptive, because when you read descriptions like that, you expect that the HP Mini 1000 will essentially be a performance "dog" that can handle only a web browser, and perhaps Picasa. I can tell you, that's a real mistake.

There's no doubt this in one of the lightest and smallest computers you've ever seen, but, surprisingly, it is also one of the most sprightly performing laptops you're likely to find in the price range (and speaking of price, it's basically a steal at between 0 and 0; I had two other laptops not long ago that were both sub-3 pound devices, and they each cost over ,000). I went ahead and just took a gamble on loading all of a trial copy of Microsoft Office 2007 (Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, etc.), and then just piled on other applications I typically use on my regular laptop (a dual core T8100 processor in an HP Dv2000 body), including picture viewers, utility programs, etc.. Surprise. It not only handled all the software, but it runs the programs remarkably well, with little lag time and surprisingly deft performance. The Intel "Atom" Processor powering this thing can easily be seen as a "sleeper" technology that people are going to increasingly talk about.

Boot time is also surprisingly fast. Mine usually loads within 20 seconds, certainly faster than my "powerful" laptop. Of course, the Mini is running Windows XP, not Vista, but still, that's pretty impressive. (By the way, I also installed Windows 7 RC1, and it worked just fine.)

The wireless has thus far worked without problems. I connect to my home network with high security settings, and to public locations using open networks, all without a hitch so far. (The unit, however, does not support draft-n specifications, so you'll be connecting at g speeds.)

The physical construction of this unit is excellent. Yes, it is small and light. But it is also sturdy in the way it feels, with little squeaking and a solid construction. The screen is bright and clear. And the keyboard is one of the best I've seen in any laptop. How did they do this?

Finally, when youfeel the tiny weight and size of the battery as you take it out of the box, you'll be thinking that it will run 30 minutes, tops. Well, with the Atom processor sipping current at exceedingly low amounts, you'll likely see some 90 - 120 minutes on a single charge. It's amazing.

You can probably tell I'm impressed with this device, because I am. If this is the beginning of "Netbooks," then I think they will become increasingly popular as people discover them.

10. Can put in a 2Gb memory card (even though it claims 1Gb is the limit)
11. Very good battery life for such a dimunutive battery

Cons
1. No draft-N wireless available
2. Bluetooth not on every model
3. HP Proprietary connector required for VGA output
4. Non-common 1.8" hard drive format limits upgrade options to the 1.8" format
5. Screen resolution, though very good, is not as high as we might wish (but is good enough)
6. Display does not fold back as far as most laptops
7. Outstanding performance probably drives us to push the unit past its stated purposes (i.e., just don't be upset if you can't run a C++ compiler while listening to Windows Media Player and editing an Excel spreadsheet)


To sum it up, this is truly an outstanding breakthrough if you understand what the unit is designed to do. I'm already seriously considering substituting my main laptop with the HP Mini for most out-of-home tasks. Five stars.

Better off with full size?
I bought this product for essentially two purposes. One is to stream music wirelessly to my stereo and built in speakers and the other is to web surf when my kids are on our other laptops. I wanted a small unit in order to save space on my bar at home where I placed it. At the end of the day it is a cool little unit, however with a couple of drawbacks I am thinking perhaps I should have gone with a full size laptop which in retrospect would not have taken up that much more room. The first drawback is that the keyboard is not quite fullsize so it is taking some getting used to, to be able to type without making a lot of errors. The second is that for some reason the screen can only lay back at a limited angle. This is awkward if you are standing while typing or sitting in a higher chair. You just get the feeling you want to push the screen back some more but can't. I do plan on using this laptop on the road for short business trips, but for longer trips,where I would be typing more, I would probably stick with my full size business lap top.

Good for travel
This machine hits the sweet spot for travel. It's light has all you need for running office and surfing the internet.

The touchpad is hard to get used to as the click buttons are to the left and right. Get a wireless mouse!

Webcamera produces very dark images, but I really didn't buy it for that. I just wanted a small lightweight machine that could run office for travel.

An added bonus: it has windows xp!! Yay! I hate Vista.

The Basics

Screen, Video & Audio
This notebook has a WXGA+ 17-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels (native 720p for high-definition viewing). Great Laptop
I have owned the Toshiba Satellite P205-S6237 for three years and still love it. This is the first computer I have ever owned that has not failed on me or has had to go to the pc doc. This is not an ultra-portable as I believe its weight is around 7 Lbs. Not the heaviest of laptops but not the lightest. I have an Acer Timeline and it is about half the weight. The Toshiba would make a great home laptop for someone who wants occasional portability. I still lug mine around when I need to. I really love everything about the Toshiba. Like another reviwer said, two of the USB ports are up front on the right side which isn't ideal but it's not that bad. There is still a total of four and I have never had to use all of them. The screen is great, better than some of my TV's and the sound is surprisingly loud and clear. The keyboard has a little flex in it but that might just be because it is three years old and about 500 essays later! I don not remember if it did this when it was new. Also, to be fair, the battery is not that great, I think at full power with no energy conservation on, it will go an hour. I have never tried running it in max battery mode. Still not that bad for three years old. It has been a great computer. Overall I still have to give it five stars because it has been a great reliable laptop.

Reliability issue
I've had this laptop over two years and really enjoyed using it. I quickly upgraded to 2G of RAM as Vista chews it up. The speed is now reasonable and I like Vista though it doesn't see eye to eye with some of my older software. Sadly after eighteen months the LCD cable malfunctioned which would have been less of a problem were I living in a country where I could access service. I see others have had this problem so Toshiba need to look at the design. Otherwise a nice machine.

Beautiful Screen But Super Slow
I owned this laptop for over a year. The screen is excellent and my wife and I love watching movies in bed. The computer runs very slow on vista in terms of transitioning from log in identities and also at start up. I have not had any problems with this PC but we consider ourselves light users because the laptop does not move much. Battery life now runs about 1.5 hours if that.
Memory upgrade: pay close attention to your memory upgrade purchase. This laptop only supports 2 GB max (Vista 32 bit) and you must use both slots (1GB per slot). I tried to upgrade to 4GB of Crucial memory but the following happened: 1). Laptop did not start with both 2GB slots full. 2). I had to put the 2GB module in the lower slot (one nearest pc board) or the laptop would not start up. It did not recognize the 512MB stick in the top slot. I lost my wireless connection and the computer did not run any faster. I think I also had a low battery issue.

Never buy Toshiba
I purchased the Toshiba P-205-S6237 approx 8 months ago. This computer has been nothing but a nightmare (We had another Toshiba laptop which is also a piece of junk) Not sure why I bought another. I will be taking it back in for its 4th DVD/CD drive next week. Nopnem of them have worked long enough to download any software. Now what good is a computer if you can't load software? If you read other reviews you will see this is a chronic problem with Toshiba computers. This machine has spent more time in the repair shop then on my desk! Toshiba Customer Service is the worst I have ever encountered. On my first call I was on hold for 67 minutes, then disconnected. Called again to be on hold for almost 1 hour then transferred to a technician for another 10 minutes. They tried to talk me into running a recovery disk, which I refused to do. They insisted it wouldn't remove everything from my computer, which it would. Their technicians are not well educated and try whatever to get you off the phone. Every employee I spoke with, which was nearly a dozen, had very bad attitudes. After all this I asked for an address to which I could send a chronology of my issues with this computer. I sent the letter and never received any type of response. So to me this means, they just do not care once the item is sold! I have only one thing to say NEVER BUY TOSHIBA

Great but not Excellent
I bought my P205-S6237 in August of 2008 and while I like the computer a lot is does have its faults. First it is a bit slower than many of its competitors and there seem to be some internal conflicts with the Vista operating system and some anti-virus protection programs. I've also had problems with the Labelflash drive and that had to be replaced under warrenty as it stopped reading and writing DVD's even though it continued to work in CD mode. Other than that the machine is great. The screen images are wonderful, I love the key board which has a full keyboard with numeric key pad. There are other features and diagnostics added by TOSHIBA that make this computer a breeze to maintain compared to many other manufactures. Would I buy another one?? You bet, at the price vers function end it's a real winner in my book.

First, we set the parameters. This is not a multi-core machine with a Pentium high-end graphics card. It is not intended for running faster processor-intensive applicationsthan any other computer on the market. Most of you have one of these machines compute-intensive already at home, or perhaps a high-end laptops with all the support power-intensive. This is a "netbook" which means a low-end laptops, which can be used for basic functions like Web browsing, e-mail and photo viewing some children.

This is a bit 'misleading, because if you read the description as expected, the HP Mini 1000 is essentially a power to be "dog" that canManage only a Web browser, and perhaps Picasa. I can tell, this is a real mistake.

There is no doubt that one of the lighter and smaller computers have ever seen, but surprisingly also one of the vigorous implementation of the laptop, probably are in the price range (and speaking of money, is basically a steal between $ 400 and $ 500, I had two other laptops long ago that both were sub-£ 3 devices, and each cost about $ 3,000). I went ahead and justgambling load all the trial version of Microsoft Office 2007 (Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, etc.), and then just piled on other applications that normally use my laptop on a regular basis (a dual processor T8100 HP dv2000 core in a body), including image viewer, utilities, etc.. Surprise. It is not only treated all software, but it works surprisingly well programs with little delay and surprisingly agile performance. The Intel Atom processor behind this thing can be simpleseen as a "sleeper technology, people always talk.

startup time is also surprisingly fast. Mine usually loaded within 20 seconds, certainly faster than my "powerful laptop. Of course, the Mini is running Windows XP, Vista, but still, this is quite impressive. (By the way, I also install Windows 7 RC1, and it worked fine.)

The wireless is working without problems. I connect to my network at home with the security settings on high, andpublic places with open networks, all without any problems so far. (The specification does not support Draft-N, so that you can connect at speeds g).

The physical construction of this device is excellent. Yes, it is small and light. But it is also robust, as it feels a little squeak and a solid construction. The screen is bright and clear. And the keyboard is one of the best I've seen in any laptop. How did they do?

Finally, if youfeelsmall size and weight of the battery as it would be out of the box, I think that it can run 30 minutes, tops. Now, with the power Atom processor sip volume is very low, you'll probably see about 90 to 120 minutes on a single charge. It 'pretty amazing.

You can probably tell, I am impressed with this device, because they are. If this is the beginning of "netbook", then I think that will become more popular, as we discovered.

Fine for almost a year...
I bought this netbook from Verizon last August. A couple of days ago, the wireless card stopped working. Brought it in to Verizon and they told me it was an HP problem. Called HP and was also connected by phone with a verizon rep, reached a guy in India. He told us it was out of warranty although it is not. The verizon rep had my purchase date on her screen and I had a printed reciept. He would not help us at all and refused to put a supervisor on the phone. Finally hung up and did some research. It seems that the wireless card on thousands of HP machines do not last long. Then they want you to replace the mother board etc. A total rip off. A scam. The machine itself works just fine BUT CAN'T CONNECT TO THE NET. Verizon says if I want to cancel my wireless account I have to pay 0. I have a useless machine and am being "held hostage" by the company that sold it to me and HP will not even speak with me after holding me on the phone for over an hour. Their customer service is horrid and they do not back up faulty products.

I see a lot of positive feedback on this product from customers who have just purchased them and I would have given this product a good review after I first got it too. If the manufacturer won't honor their warranty and won't give you any customer service, buyer, be VERY AWARE. DO SOME RESEARCH ON HP PRODUCTS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE BEFORE BUYING. Incredibly slow and unresponsive machine...not worth the money
I was in search of a laptop but didn't have much money, so I looked into getting a netbook. All I needed was a machine to do word processing and surf the internet, so my expectations were pretty low. This machine doesn't even do that effectively...it is incredibly slow and crashes constantly doing basic tasks, like opening a web-page. I would highly suggest you just invest a little more money and get an actual laptop.

Do not buy this HP!!!
This machine was adorable, until it died after three months. The hard drive just failed. It is now lost somewhere in Texas...under warranty, but HP sent it to the wrong address and doesn't seem to be able to find it. Their service is beyond horrible. You call somewhere in India, who calls Texas, and I am not sure which is less in touch with reality.

My next computer will be a Mac...or purchased from some company who has a clue.

Great value with limitations
I've been using this computer for several months now.

Compared to a smart phone at 0, this computer at half the price is a great value. It's amazingly light weight and it does everything a laptop does.

Although it has a real keyboard, it is necessarily a bit smaller than a normal computer, and I find myself making frequent typos. Annoyingly, it has keys marked "home" and "end," but they only work as cursor keys -- I've tried every keystroke combination I can think of and they're still just cursor keys. So I have to scroll to find the beginning and ending of documents or posts.

The display is a bit pale, particularly so on battery. There is no display adjustment possible.

The main problem, though, was HP Support. I have the mobile version of the Mini, with a built-in broadband card, and my computer kept trying to connect to it which resulted in error messages; at one point, I was getting several error messages per minute. Neither email nor phone support was able to help me with this problem despite many emails and a long time on the phone. It finally resolved itself.

RAM is limited to 1 G; it's not expandable.

This is a great computer for travel, absolutely fabulous. But lately I've been using it as a substitute for my big laptop which is in the shop, and I find myself getting frustrated with it.

A Real Breakthough Technology (and I Mean that Seiously)
I've been using this HP Mini 1000 Netbook for a while now, and decided to write a review for Amazon because I'm so impressed with the device. If you are considering a "Netbook" like this, chances are you've never owned one, and are perhaps a bit skeptical about the device. So was I.

First off, let's set the parameters. This isn't a multi-core Pentium processor machine with a high end dedicated graphics card. It isn't meant for running the most processor intensive applications faster than any other computer on the market. Most of you have one of these number-crunching machines at home already, or perhaps a high-end laptop with all the power-intensive support. This is a "Netbook," which means a slimmed down laptop that can be used for basic functions, such as web browsing, e-mail, and some minor picture viewing.

That's a bit deceptive, because when you read descriptions like that, you expect that the HP Mini 1000 will essentially be a performance "dog" that can handle only a web browser, and perhaps Picasa. I can tell you, that's a real mistake.

There's no doubt this in one of the lightest and smallest computers you've ever seen, but, surprisingly, it is also one of the most sprightly performing laptops you're likely to find in the price range (and speaking of price, it's basically a steal at between 0 and 0; I had two other laptops not long ago that were both sub-3 pound devices, and they each cost over ,000). I went ahead and just took a gamble on loading all of a trial copy of Microsoft Office 2007 (Outlook, Word, Excel, OneNote, etc.), and then just piled on other applications I typically use on my regular laptop (a dual core T8100 processor in an HP Dv2000 body), including picture viewers, utility programs, etc.. Surprise. It not only handled all the software, but it runs the programs remarkably well, with little lag time and surprisingly deft performance. The Intel "Atom" Processor powering this thing can easily be seen as a "sleeper" technology that people are going to increasingly talk about.

Boot time is also surprisingly fast. Mine usually loads within 20 seconds, certainly faster than my "powerful" laptop. Of course, the Mini is running Windows XP, not Vista, but still, that's pretty impressive. (By the way, I also installed Windows 7 RC1, and it worked just fine.)

The wireless has thus far worked without problems. I connect to my home network with high security settings, and to public locations using open networks, all without a hitch so far. (The unit, however, does not support draft-n specifications, so you'll be connecting at g speeds.)

The physical construction of this unit is excellent. Yes, it is small and light. But it is also sturdy in the way it feels, with little squeaking and a solid construction. The screen is bright and clear. And the keyboard is one of the best I've seen in any laptop. How did they do this?

Finally, when youfeel the tiny weight and size of the battery as you take it out of the box, you'll be thinking that it will run 30 minutes, tops. Well, with the Atom processor sipping current at exceedingly low amounts, you'll likely see some 90 - 120 minutes on a single charge. It's amazing.

You can probably tell I'm impressed with this device, because I am. If this is the beginning of "Netbooks," then I think they will become increasingly popular as people discover them.
